Larry Leiske
Larry Leiske, MD has retired from the practice of Ophthalmology effective October 2010. This is a bittersweet moment for all of us at Milauskas Eye Institute because we all very much love and respect Dr. Leiske. However, we also realize that Dr. Leiske has earned his time away from Ophthalmology and want him to enjoy his retirement.
It has been a pleasure working with Dr. Leiske since he joined Milauskas Eye Institute in 1994. He is the definition of the consumate professional, but beyond that he is a loyal and caring physician who always put his patients first. Dr. Leiske's dedication to his profession has always been paramount and we will always appreciate his efforts on our behalf and especially on behalf of the patients he has cared for.
Dr. Leiske comes from a generation of Ophthalmologists who created modern Ophthalmology. When he first started his career cataract surgery required a week stay in the hospital and required the wearing of thick cataract glasses post-operatively. Dr. Leiske and his peers changed this by pushing for small incision cataract surgery using Intra-ocular lenses and phaco-emulsification. This changed the nature of the surgery dramatically allowing patients to return home the same day of surgery, recover quickly, and see without the need for thick glasses. While this is considered standard today, it was surgeons like Dr. Leiske who helped break down barriers in the profession and government to make it happen.
He also helped spread such advances in Ophthalmology through international lecturing that taught others these new techniques. He lectured in across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and South America. It can truly be said that he was a leader and pioneer in the field of modern Ophthalmology.
Dr. Leiske helped tens of thousands of patients improve or keep their vision over the years. He is an exemplary member of the medical community, and we wish him well. Here's hoping that retirement brings him as much satisfaction on the golf course as his career in Ophthalmology brought him.
Sincerely,
Albert T. Milauskas, M.D., FACS
