Dr. and Mrs. Milauskas Honored

Dr. and Mrs. Milauskas were honored by the Guide Dogs of the Desert for their commitment to the community and to the Guide Dogs of the Desert.

At the Agua Caliente Resort on Saturday, December 10, Dr. and Mrs. Milauskas received the "Heroes of the Year" award. It was a moving ceremony that recognized both of them for the good they've done in the field of Ophthalmology as well as local philanthropy.

Through a variety of fundraising endeavors Dr. and Mrs. Milauskas and MEI staff have raised enough money to name eight puppies for the Guide Dogs of the Desert. The results of these efforts are now being realized as the first puppy named (Dolce) has graduated as a guide dog and is now helping her new owner have a life with more freedom and mobility.

Dr. and Mrs. Milauskas are extremely honored and humbled by this award. Dr. Milauskas said "It is important to give back to the community that has been so good to us. We are very happy to support such a great local organization and will continue to do so. We look forward to our next golf tournament in October 2012 to be our most successful yet!"

Dr. Yoh Receives Prestigious Award

Paul Yoh, OD received an honorary degree in Science from his alma mater Elmhurst College in Illinois. This is a tremendous honor and we want to congratulate Dr. Yoh on receiving it. We are very proud to have Dr. Yoh on staff. In the commencement program at Elmhurst college, Dr. Yoh received the following write-up:

Paul J. Yoh, O.D. ’86
Staff Optometrist
Milauskas Eye Institute, California

Paul Yoh realized the American dream. With the support of excellent foster parents, he demonstrated the power of hard work, purpose and dedication while obtaining an outstanding education and building a widely respected practice as an optometrist.

Dr. Yoh worked as a night custodian to earn money to attend Elmhurst College, where he earned two degrees: a B.S. with majors in biology and Spanish (1986) and a B.S. with a major in psychology (1988). He was a member of five honor societies: Phi Kappa Phi for academic excellence, Omega Delta Kappa for leadership, Beta Beta Beta for biological studies, Alpha Epsilon Delta for pre-professional health scholarship, and Alpha Mu Gamma for foreign language study. He received the Lincoln Academy of Illinois Student Laureate Award, which is presented annually to a single student from each of the state’s four-year, degree-granting institutions for excellence in curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Dr. Yoh pursued his optometry studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a B.S. in physiological optics (1990) and a Doctor of Optometry degree (1992). While at Berkeley, he was communications director and editor of BLINK, a publication of the University of California Optometric Student Association. He also was a graduate and International Fellowship member of the Asian American Optometric Group.

Dr. Yoh practices at the Milauskas Eye Institute, one of the largest and most progressive ophthalmology centers in California. It primarily serves the desert cities of the Coachella Valley east of Los Angeles. Founded in 1980, the Institute is known for its superb medical staff and technological and surgical innovations that have advanced the practice of ophthalmology and the health of countless patients.
