SLT: Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

The most common type of glaucoma is known as Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG). This is where there is a sustained increase in the fluid inside the eye (aqueous humor) or a decrease in fluid drainage. This can cause and increase in intraocular pressure, which, over time, can destroy optic nerve fibers.

The most common treaments have been eye drops, pills or laser treatments. If these methods fail, surgery may be required to open a new drainage channel in the eye.

SLT is an advanced type of laser treatment. Unlike regular Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty, SLT targets only specifically pigmented cells to activate increased drainage. SLT, since it doesn't damage other tissues as ALT can, may be repeated if necessary and can be an effective alternative to ALT or other treatments.
