Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills.
An ASC must ensure that you are protected from surprise or balance billing. Surprise billing is when you receive services at an in-network facility but an out-of-network provider is used without your knowledge. The out-of-network provider then bills you at the out-of-network rate.
Balance Billing is the difference between the practice charge (Billed) and the amount the insurance allows (Covered or Allowed Amount). You are always responsible for your co-pay, co-insurance, and/or deductible but you are not responsible to pay the difference between the original charge and the amount allowed by your insurance company. Eye Surgery Center of the Desert will never balance bill you. If you receive services at Eye Surgery Center of the Desert and an out-of-network provider is used, you will only be billed the amount equal to your in-network benefits. If you are uninsured or self-pay Eye Surgery Center of the Desert will provide you with a statement of expected charges prior to your procedure.
Eye Surgery Center of the Desert expects that you pay for your services prior to any procedure and therefore will anticipate all expenses prior to performing the procedure. However, should there be a conflict between expected costs and the final actual bill you have the right to file a complaint. You may file a complaint with Health and Human Services or your state Department of Insurance.
